Serbian is a form of Serbo-Croatian spoken by Serbs in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and neighbouring countries. There are two principal Serbian dialects, Shtokavian and Torlakian. The literary and standard language is based on Shtokavian, which is also the basis of Standard Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, "Croatian", "Bosnian", and "Serbian" are considered to be three names for a single official language.

Serbian is the only European language with active digraphia, using both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. The Serbian Cyrillic alphabet was devised in 1814 by Serbian linguist Vuk Karadžić, who created the alphabet on phonemic principles. The Latin alphabet was designed by German-Croatian linguist Ljudevit Gaj in 1830 and is used by the other standard forms of Serbo-Croatian.

Approximately 10 million people speak Serbian, with large Serbian speaking communities in Australia, USA, Germany, and Canada.
